The CAPESTORM cycle team got 2010 off to a great start with a podium finish in the first race of the year. The report is on our website, so click the more button for details. Well done to Ed Green, a UCT student and a new face on the team. James Tennant (Club 100) won the first race of the Virgin Active series that took place this past Sunday in Tokai.
The race started in Tokai, went over Black Hill, then through Kommetjie, Smitswinkel, up the Red Hill Naval climb, over Black Hill again and finishes on top of Ou Kaapse Weg. This year the leaque has an added category, namely king of the mountain jersey up for grabs. The three KOM sprints were at the top of Black Hill, Red Hill Naval Climb and the finish on the top of Ou Kaapse Weg.
The riders started out into a strong head wind heading up Boys Drive, but the race only started to get going as soon as the riders turned right up Black Hill with the wind behind them.
The KOM at the top of Black Hill was won by Jaco Cronje (North Cliff Cycles). Then as the riders turned left at the bottom of Black Hill, Shaun Roos (Daikin Gu) attacked and was followed by Raymond Cox (Olympic Cycles) and Wandisile Mahlombe. These three riders quickly build up a 2 minute gap, with the main field not seeming to take any interest in chasing down this breakaway.
These three riders started Red Hill together with a 2 minute gap, the sprint was won at the top by the Wandisile Mahlombe, with Shaun Roos second and Raymond Cox third. As these 3 riders started Black Hill, Raymond Cox was dropped.
As the main field started Black Hill, James Tennant (Club 100), Ryan Kemp(Daikin Gu), Ed Green(CAPESTORM), Siyabong Mnqwazi and Songezo Jim, broke away and quickly opened up a gap. Halfway up the climb James Tennant attacked the group and managed to build up a small lead very quickly.
As the two leaders started Ou Kaapse Weg, Shaun Roos dropped Wandisile Mahlombe, but quarter way up Ou Kaapse Weg, Shaun Roos was caught by Tennant, Roos managed to sit his wheel for a short while but was eventaully dropped. Tennant then went on for a solo victory, with Shaun Roos holding out for second.
Results:
1) James Tennant (Club 100)
2) Shaun Roos (Daikin Gu)
