Tech corner - Softshells
Image: Tech corner - Softshells The term Softshell is now widely used to describe garments produced by every major clothing manufacturer including CAPESTORM. In fact we were the first SA company to introduce a domestically produced softshell into the market, something we are very proud of. Our range has now expanded to include women specific garments, and garments for a variety of activities. Softshells are gradually being used in place of traditional hardshells which generally offer a high level of waterproofness and in many cases low breathability (although the breathability of our hard shells such as the Vantage and Front Point jackets are amongst the best on the market). The softshell combines the advantage of a hard shell (high water resistance) with advantages of a lighter weight jacket in terms of comfort, flexibility and breathability. The key point is that the garment puts breathability over waterproofing. It is for the active user who needs to know that he won't end up a sweaty mass after hard activity. The reality is that although it may rain, the majority of the time the user will be more concerned with keeping his body dry from the inside out, wicking perspiration away from the body.

The softshell can also decrease the need for layering, offering both a water and wind resistant outer and an inner than keeps you warm when it's cold and also wicks away sweat when you are too warm. The softshell user is anyone who uses the outdoors but wants to keep their personal climate controlled to the optimum. Once you accept that a softshell garment doesn't do everything, but does most things better than a specific garment you start to appreciate their value. As a user myself I know that to have a 100% waterproof garment will be unnecessary for the majority of activities. You will sweat and get wet and cold. The softshell's high water and wind resistance coupled with a very high degree of breathability works perfectly for most outdoor activities.

To view our extensive range of Softshells, click on 'Products' choose 'product type' from the drop down menu on the left and click on the Softshell icon.
