John Yeld is the award-winning environmental writer of the Cape Argus newspaper. He grew up in Fish Hoek at a time when it was still an independent village, and spent his childhood holidays playing on the sand dunes before there was any development there and exploring the mountains around Silvermine before Ou Kaapse Weg was built. He has written extensively about conservation issues on the Peninsula over many years, including the development of the Table Mountain National Park and construction of the Hoerikwaggo hiking trail. He has walked all the formally completed sections of this trail with his friends - some more than once - and runs regularly on many of the other trails on the mountain. He and his partner Martine Barker are the authors of Mountains in the Sea - An interpretive guide to the Table Mountain National Park, and are in the process of producing a coffee table version of this book.
