A chronicle of an extraordinary experience in the Sahara
Image: A chronicle of an extraordinary experience in the Sahara "The most gruelling event on Earth"...

Stanimir Sokolinski, a local trail runner from Cape Town, completed the 2009 Marathon des Sables in April this year. This ultra-marathon takes place in the southern Sahara Desert in Morocco, and covers a distance of approximately 245km over seven days. Participants are required to be fully self-sufficient, carrying all their own food, clothing, equipment, sleeping gear, etc. for the entire duration of their journey across the desert.

During the race, the runners crossed a variety of difficult terrains, and they were exposed to unpredictable weather conditions. For the first time in the 24 year history of the event, unexpected yet severe flooding forced the organisers to make last minute changes in terms of logistics and routes - a nerve-racking experience for all.

During his presentation, Stanimir will show beautiful images of Morocco and the Sahara Desert. He will also share with you the details of his 2 year physical and mental preparation for the event, including nutrition, and carefully selected light-weight packing and the specific gear he used.

Proceeds from the evening will be donated to Wilderness Search and Rescue, Western Cape.
